What is community mapping?
Community mapping is a research method that focuses on the good things in a community. It aims to find opportunities for collaboration and identify any needs to be addressed.
How did the KU Community Mapping Project work?
We recruited 10 students and tasked them with mapping the Royal Borough of Kingston (RBK). Through action-based research and four sessions with members of the community, they mapped:
- Green spaces
- Faith institutions
- Sports clubs
- Historical memorials
- Over 326 km of public road
What did the Project find?
The Project found that community members love living, working and studying in RBK. They especially like:
- The River
- The Town Centre
- The green spaces, including Richmond Park
- The multitude of services on offer
- The history of the borough
